Oops. There it is!

How often do you stop and observe your surroundings?

Walking down a busy NYC street recently, I stopped to look at a lovely seating arrangement in the window of a high-end antique-auction house. Against the white fabric, was a dark spot. What is that? OMG. A large bug of some kind.

Laughing to myself, I went in to the store to find someone to share my observation. Surely, this could influence the bid price of the items. bug for blog

The staff member and I laughed at the situation. The large bug was a fat fly that had flown in from the street. The seating arrangement had already been sold. Both updates were positive.

The staff thanked me for taking the time to tell them of the bug and for taking the time to notice their window display.

Words of wisdom from a recent media training class that I attended. newscaster

  • Be Brilliant
  • Be Gone

Sometimes, we talk too much. We are uncomfortable with the pregnant pause – the silence between conversations. Framed within the context of speaking to the media and not having full control over the comments or PARTS of your comments that will be published, the words ring true.

Probably a good piece of advice for many of our daily conversations as well. Do you agree?

out of date clockA business acquaintance recently referred to herself as a PIP – a “Previously Important Person”. While I chuckled, I was also saddened by the expression. With the daily transitions that each of us are making through professional responsibilities, child-rearing, parent caregiving, volunteer roles and more, we will often move into and out of the spotlight.

How can we avoid feeling like we were “previously important”?

Listening to a panel discussion on Healthcare Consumerism, an audience member pointed out an age-old phrase that rang ever so true: Information is NOT Knowledge.

Information is only knowledge when it can be used in a productive, beneficial manner. Too much of the healthcare information that we are exposed to daily is written in lingo that few understand or that necessitates a glossary of words to explain.

We do this in almost every industry. Healthcare. Insurance. Retirement Plans. Nutritional Content.knowledge

What are you doing to ensure that the information that you acquire is turned into knowledge that can be used advantageously for yourself and those you care about?

Courage can include Fear

Nelson Mandela  is  credited with saying that ” Courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. Real confidence is acknowledging fear and moving forward anyway.”

It has been years since I went to a sketch class and so it was great fun and the awakening of many senses when I recently went to a Tuesday Sketch Night in NYC. I watched the rubenesque model take many poses with grace and sometimes sheer abandonment. And yes, she was nude. Talk about real confidence!!

The experience was a strong reminder that we must each get beyond the mind-chatter. To march to our own definitions of success…not the societal definitions of perfection.

Go out and do something courageous today!

Dealing with a high-stress situation a few years back, I shared my woes with a friend who responded in generic terms about how everything would work out and “this, too shall pass”. Anxious for assistance and simultaneously scared to put “labels” on the situation at hand, the generic nature of my friend’s response infuriated me. I had no doubt in her desire to help me; it was obvious that she did not want to overstep any undefined boundaries in the friendship.

Instinct took over. I found myself getting pretty specific in defining the resources that I required. I then took it another step further and defined the people in her own network that I wanted her to call — on my behalf. A series of phone calls, emails and text messages soon followed — on my behalf. By better defining what I needed, I had empowered my friend to help me solve the problem. And, she was as excited as I was when the puzzle pieces starting coming together.

Did you have a situation this week where you clearly defined what you needed from another person?

The dialogue was around customer service. “ I want my customers to receive the best possible customer service from my staff. At the same time”, he continued, “I will not allow my own staff to be bullied or intimidated.”
